Discover Nissan e-POWER Technology - Electric Innovation, Powered by Petrol

Nissan e-POWER is a unique electrified driving experience that combines the benefits of electric power with the convenience of petrol. Unlike traditional hybrids, e-POWER drives the wheels using an electric motor only – delivering smooth, quiet, responsive acceleration without ever needing to plug in. At Startin Nissan Worcester, we’re proud to offer the latest e-POWER models, including the Nissan Qashqai and Nissan X-Trail, giving you the feel of an EV with the freedom of a petrol engine.

Enjoy improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and the electrified drive of the future – no charging required.

e-POWER - A Unique Combination of Petrol and Electric

Nissan e-POWER is a breakthrough technology that delivers the electric drive experience without the need to plug in. Exclusive to Nissan, this system uses a petrol engine and lithium-ion battery to power an electric motor, with the motor alone driving the wheels.

You’ll enjoy the same instant torque and smooth acceleration as a fully electric vehicle, along with lower tailpipe emissions and reduced running costs compared to traditional petrol engines¹.

e-POWER also features regenerative braking, capturing energy during deceleration to help keep the battery charged on the go - for a smarter, more efficient drive.

Everything You Need to Know About Nissan’s Unique e-POWER System

Nissan e-POWER technology delivering electric drive using petrol-generated power

Fuelled by Petrol - Driven by Electric

With Nissan e-POWER, you don’t need to change your habits to enjoy electric-style driving. The vehicle runs on petrol, but it’s the electric motor that powers the wheels — giving you smooth, responsive acceleration and the quiet, refined feel of an EV every time you press the pedal.

Recharges on the Go - No Plug-In Required

Unlike plug-in hybrids or full EVs, e-POWER vehicles never need to be charged externally. The petrol engine acts as a generator, producing energy that’s either sent directly to the electric motor or stored in the battery for later use. This means you get all the benefits of electric driving without having to plug in.

Regenerative Braking for Extra Efficiency

e-POWER doesn’t waste braking energy. Instead, its regenerative braking system captures energy produced during deceleration and converts it into electricity, which is then used to recharge the battery. This boosts efficiency and reduces reliance on the petrol engine – especially in urban stop-start traffic.

Why e-POWER Makes Everyday Driving Smarter and Easier

Nissan e-POWER refuelling at a petrol station - no range anxiety

No Range Anxiety

e-POWER takes the stress out of electric driving. Unlike fully electric cars, the battery is constantly topped up by a petrol engine – so you can take on longer journeys without worrying about charging. Just refuel at a standard petrol station and you’re back on the road with no delays.

Go Further, Spend Less

Fewer refills, lower running costs. The combination of a lithium-ion battery and petrol engine allows e-POWER vehicles to deliver significantly better fuel efficiency than mild hybrids. That means fewer trips to the pump and more money saved in the long run.

All your questions answered

Nissan’s e-POWER is unique as the wheels are only ever provided power by the electric motor –and this electric motor is provided power by a combination of the VC-Turbo petrol engine and lithium-ion battery.

In a 100% electric vehicle, the motor driving the wheels is only provided power by a large lithium-ion battery, which you have to plug-in to charge. With a fully electric vehicle you experience zero emissions while driving.

In a traditional hybrid vehicle, power can be provided to the wheels by the engine, the electric motor or a combination of both. The battery that provides power to the motor is recharged by the engine. As power is provided to the wheels in different ways, the way the vehicle drives will vary.

e-POWER gives the feeling of driving an electric vehicle, without the need to plug in.

The components that make up the e-POWER powertrain consists of:

- An Electric motor that drives the wheels
- A Lithium-Ion battery which powers the electric motor
- An internal combustion engine which generates energy for the battery and electric motor
- A Power Generator which converts mechanical energy to electrical energy
- An Inverter which manages the energy recieved from the engine to charge the Lithium-Ion battery and/or power the electric motor

Thanks to some clever technology, your e-POWER vehicle will automatically activate the internal combustion engine when the charge level of the Lithium-Ion battery drops below a certain level.

You can check on the status of the e-POWER powertrain via the energy flow diagram, displayed on the vehicle’s combimeter. This will display; battery state of charge, when the engine is running, brake regeneration and more.

e-POWER is available with e-4ORCE all wheel drive technology for All-New X-Trail.

For quicker recharging, e-POWER uses a smaller lithium-ion battery compared to a standard Nissan electric vehicle.
