Are Petrol and Diesel Cars Really Being “Phased Out”? What UK Drivers Need to Know in 2026

Date Posted: 22 March 2026

Are Petrol and Diesel Cars Actually Being Banned?

At Startin Group, one of the most common questions we’re hearing from customers right now is simple: Are petrol and diesel cars being phased out, and should I be worried?

With headlines regularly mentioning bans, deadlines and electric vehicles, it’s no surprise there’s confusion. For many drivers, it can feel like the rules are constantly changing.

The reality is far more straightforward than it might seem. Petrol and diesel cars are not disappearing overnight, and for most drivers, there is no immediate pressure to change.

What the 2035 Ban Really Means

The UK Government has set a target to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. However, this does not mean that petrol or diesel cars will suddenly be taken off the road.

It simply means that from 2035 onwards, manufacturers will no longer be able to sell new purely petrol or diesel vehicles. Even then, some hybrid vehicles are expected to remain available beyond this date.

Crucially, if you already own a petrol or diesel car, you will still be able to:

  • Drive it as normal

  • Buy and sell used petrol and diesel vehicles

  • Service and maintain your car as usual

There is no ban on ownership, and no requirement to switch immediately.

Can You Still Buy Petrol and Diesel Cars Today?

Yes, absolutely.

In 2026, petrol and diesel cars still make up a significant portion of the UK market. Manufacturers continue to produce efficient, refined engines that suit a wide range of drivers.

For many customers visiting Startin Group dealerships, petrol or diesel still makes the most sense depending on:

Driving distance

  • Access to charging

  • Budget

  • Lifestyle needs

There is still a wide choice of vehicles available, and that is not changing any time soon.

What About Hybrid Cars?

Hybrids are playing an increasingly important role in bridging the gap between traditional engines and fully electric vehicles.

Self-charging hybrids and plug-in hybrids offer:

  • Lower emissions

  • Improved fuel efficiency

  • Flexibility without relying fully on charging infrastructure

Under current plans, many hybrid models are expected to remain on sale beyond 2035, although exact regulations will continue to evolve.

For drivers not quite ready to go fully electric, hybrids are becoming an increasingly popular middle ground.

What Happens to Used Petrol and Diesel Cars?

The used car market is expected to remain strong for petrol and diesel vehicles for many years to come.

Even as new electric vehicle sales increase, millions of petrol and diesel cars will remain on UK roads well into the 2030s and beyond. This means:

  • Continued demand for used petrol and diesel vehicles

  • Ongoing availability of parts and servicing

  • Stable resale opportunities, depending on condition and mileage

For many drivers, buying a used petrol or diesel car will continue to be a practical and cost-effective option.

Should You Be Worried About Switching Too Soon?

In short, no.

While electric vehicles are growing in popularity, the right time to switch depends entirely on your personal circumstances.

Some drivers are ready to move to electric now, particularly those who:

  • Can charge at home

  • Cover predictable daily mileage

  • Want to reduce running costs

Others may find that petrol, diesel or hybrid still suits their needs better for now.

At Startin Group, we always encourage customers to make decisions based on how they actually use their car, rather than reacting to headlines or deadlines.

The Future of Driving Is Changing – But Gradually

There is no doubt that the automotive industry is moving toward electrification. Investment in electric vehicles, charging infrastructure and battery technology continues to grow rapidly.

However, this transition is happening over time, not overnight.

For drivers in 2026, the most important thing to understand is that there is still flexibility and choice. Whether you prefer petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric, there are options available that suit different lifestyles and budgets.

Making the Right Choice for You

Choosing your next car should be about what works for you today, as well as what makes sense for the future.

At Startin Group, we speak with drivers every day who are weighing up their options. Some are ready to make the move to electric, while others are better suited to petrol, diesel or hybrid for now.

Our role is to help you understand those options clearly, without pressure, so you can make a confident decision at the right time.

Thinking About Your Next Car?

If you’re unsure which type of vehicle is right for you, visiting one of our dealerships and speaking with our team can make all the difference. Whether you’re considering sticking with petrol or diesel, exploring hybrid, or looking at electric for the first time, we’re here to help you find the right fit.

The key thing to remember is this: the future of driving is evolving, but there’s no need to rush. The best choice is the one that works for you.
