EV Charging Issues? Here's an Easy Troubleshooting Guide

Date Posted: 06 August 2025

Electric vehicles are an excellent step towards a greener, cleaner future. But what do you do when your EV simply will not charge? It's infuriating, but more often than not, the problem isn't as large as it appears.

At Startin Group, we know that EV ownership can come with its questions. That's why we've created this simple guide to assist you in fixing the most prevalent EV charging issues stress-free.

Your EV Won't Charge: Where to Begin

If your vehicle won't charge at all, don't worry. Do some fast checks:

  • Is the car actually plugged in? Ridiculous, we know, but it happens more than you'd imagine.
  • Is the cable plugged in correctly? Unplug and plug the charger back in securely.
  • Look for warning lights on your dashboard. Your EV may be trying to say something.
  • Also, use another charging cable or port if possible. If a different charger works, the problem may be with your original cable or unit.
  • Check if the charging point is working - look for status lights or use apps like Zap-Map to see if other users have reported issues with that charger.

Charging Is Slower Than Normal

Slow charging is normal and not necessarily a fault. The speed of charging depends on:

  • Your battery's current charge
  • The charger type (standard 3-pin vs. rapid charger)
  • Temperature outside
  • Vehicle settings, such as charging restrictions

Check your vehicle's screen or app preferences. Some EVs enable you to customise charging limits or times of day to charge off-peak, and this may be the cause.

Charging Cable is Stuck

Your charging cable sometimes won't come out. Try this:

  • Ensure the car is unlocked; some EVs lock the cable when charging.
  • Stop the charging session from the car or app first, then unplug.
  • If it also won't move, look for a manual release by the charging port. Most of them have one.
  • If that doesn't work, consult your owner's manual for the release mechanism for your car.

Public Charger Not Working

When you're trying to charge at a public charger and nothing is working, try the following:

  • Look at the screen for error messages. Sometimes it's a connectivity problem.
  • Double-check that you've completed the payment or start the procedures properly.
  • Try restarting the session via the charger or app.
  • If it is still not working, inform the charger company about the issue and switch to another unit.

Not all chargers are created equal. Some require a special app or RFID card for activation.

Charging Cuts Off During Session

This may occur because of:

  • A loose charger-vehicle connection
  • Power fluctuations at the station
  • Overheating, either in the cable or the charger
  • A predetermined charging capacity is set in your EV

Double-check that everything's still plugged in, and keep an eye on your vehicle's app for alerts. Some EVs will automatically cut out if something doesn't seem secure.

Your Home Charger Isn't Responding

If your home wallbox charger isn't responding:

  • Try restarting the unit if possible (some have a reset).
  • Check the power supply at home; a blown fuse could be the issue.
  • Check for lights or error codes on the unit. These might assist you in troubleshooting or describing the issue to a technician.

If the issue persists, then call the installer or manufacturer for assistance.

Final Thoughts

EVs are intelligent, and so is their charging system. Although issues do arise, most issues have instant solutions. A little patience and this guide may keep you out of trouble, save you time, and perhaps avoid a service visit.

And don't forget, if you're not sure or the issue seems urgent, always call in a professional. Better safe than sorry.

Automotive Compliance Ltd's permissions as a Principal Firm allows Startin Group Ltd, Thomas Startin Junr Ltd to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We can introduce you to a selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. An introduction to a lender does not amount to independent financial advice and we act as their agent for this introduction. Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next best offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you ask us what the amount of commission is, we will tell you in good time before the Finance agreement is executed.
