From Rising Fuel Prices to Lower Running Costs – Why EVs Make Sense Now

Date Posted: 15 March 2026

Why Now Is the Best Time to Switch to an Electric Vehicle

At Startin Group, we’ve seen the conversation around electric vehicles change dramatically over the last few years. What once felt like a future technology is now very much part of everyday motoring across the UK. Drivers visiting our dealerships are increasingly asking the same question: Is now finally the right time to go electric?

For many motorists, the answer is yes. A combination of rising fuel costs, improved technology and expanding charging infrastructure means switching to an electric vehicle has never made more sense.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), electric vehicles now account for around one in five new cars registered in the UK, showing just how quickly drivers are embracing the shift toward electric motoring.

Petrol and Diesel Costs Continue to Rise

Fuel prices remain one of the biggest frustrations for drivers. Even when prices temporarily drop, they rarely stay low for long. Over time, the cost of filling up with petrol or diesel has steadily increased, making the day to day running of traditional cars more expensive.

Electric vehicles offer a refreshing alternative. Charging at home, particularly overnight on off peak tariffs, can cost significantly less than visiting a petrol station. According to the RAC, charging an electric car at home can cost less than half the price of running a petrol or diesel car per mile when using cheaper overnight electricity tariffs.

For drivers covering regular commuting miles, the savings can quickly add up over the course of a year.

At Startin Group we regularly speak with customers who are surprised at how much they can reduce their monthly motoring costs simply by switching from fuel to electricity.

Electric Vehicles Are Better Than Ever

The first generation of electric cars raised understandable questions about range and practicality. Today’s electric vehicles are a completely different story.

Modern EVs offer impressive driving ranges, rapid charging capabilities and smooth, quiet performance that many drivers prefer once they experience it. Many current electric vehicles now offer ranges exceeding 250 to 350 miles on a single charge, more than enough for the average UK driver.

In fact, the Department for Transport reports that the average UK driver travels around 20 miles per day, meaning most journeys can easily be covered by an electric vehicle without needing to charge daily.

Many of our customers who take their first electric test drive at Startin Group comment on the same thing: how refined and effortless the driving experience feels compared with a traditional engine.

Trade In Your Petrol or Diesel – Trade Up to Electric

Thinking about switching to electric? With Startin Group’s Trade-In Trade-Up offer, your current petrol or diesel car could help reduce the cost of your next vehicle. Simply trade in your existing car and receive an extra £500 off a brand-new vehicle from stock, or £250 off an approved used car when you upgrade through Startin Group. Our team will provide a quick, transparent valuation and apply the value of your current car directly towards your next vehicle – making the move to electric easier and more affordable.

Start by valuing your car and see how much you could take off your next EV.

Charging Has Become Easier

One of the biggest barriers people once worried about was charging. The UK charging network has expanded rapidly, with new infrastructure being installed across the country every week.

According to Zapmap, there are now more than 60,000 public charging connectors across the UK, with thousands more being added each year. Rapid chargers along motorways can now add significant range in as little as 20 to 30 minutes.

For many drivers, most charging happens at home. Installing a home charger allows you to plug in overnight and start every morning with a full battery. In practical terms, this means never needing to stop at a petrol station during the week.

As the International Energy Agency recently noted, electric vehicle adoption is accelerating globally as charging infrastructure expands and battery technology improves.

Lower Maintenance and Running Costs

Electric vehicles also have fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel cars. Without components such as exhaust systems, gearboxes and complex engines, servicing requirements can be simpler.

Research from consumer group Which? suggests that EV drivers can spend around 30 percent less on maintenance and servicing over time compared with traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.

Brake wear is often reduced thanks to regenerative braking, and fewer mechanical components mean fewer things that can potentially need replacing.

For drivers looking for predictable ownership costs, this is another reason electric vehicles are gaining popularity.

The Driving Experience Is Surprisingly Fun

One of the biggest misconceptions about electric vehicles is that they are purely about efficiency. In reality, they can be incredibly enjoyable to drive.

Electric motors deliver instant torque, meaning acceleration is smooth and responsive the moment you press the pedal. Combined with quiet operation and a low centre of gravity from the battery placement, many drivers find electric cars feel both relaxed and surprisingly lively on the road.

Many first time EV drivers say the same thing after their first drive. Once you experience the instant response and smooth performance, going back to a traditional engine can feel like a step backwards.

How Much Does It Cost to Run an Electric Car in the UK?

One of the most common questions drivers ask is how the real world running costs of an electric vehicle compare with a petrol or diesel car.

While electricity prices can vary depending on tariffs, charging an EV at home on an overnight tariff can cost roughly 7 to 10 pence per mile. By comparison, petrol or diesel vehicles often cost closer to 15 to 20 pence per mile depending on fuel prices and vehicle efficiency.

Drivers who charge primarily at home can therefore save hundreds of pounds per year on fuel alone.

Electric vehicles can also reduce other ownership costs. Road tax for many EVs has historically been lower, and company car drivers benefit from significantly reduced Benefit in Kind taxation compared with petrol or diesel vehicles.

When you combine lower fuel costs, reduced maintenance and potential tax benefits, the overall cost of ownership can be surprisingly competitive.

Common Myths About Electric Vehicles

Despite the rapid growth in electric vehicle adoption, a few myths still remain.

One common belief is that electric cars cannot travel far enough for everyday use. In reality, most modern EVs offer more than enough range for typical UK driving habits. With the average daily journey sitting around 20 miles, most drivers only need to charge a few times per week.

Another myth is that charging is difficult. While early EV drivers relied heavily on public chargers, many owners today simply charge at home overnight. Public charging networks continue to expand rapidly across the UK, making longer journeys easier than ever.

Some drivers also worry about battery lifespan. In practice, modern EV batteries are designed to last for many years and typically come with manufacturer warranties covering around eight years or more.

As more drivers gain real world experience with electric vehicles, many of these concerns quickly disappear.

The Future of Motoring Is Electric

Across the UK, the shift toward electric vehicles is accelerating. Governments, manufacturers and infrastructure providers are investing heavily in the technology, and new models continue to arrive with longer ranges and improved capabilities.

The UK Government plans to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, meaning electric vehicles will become the norm rather than the exception in the years ahead.

For drivers considering the switch, the timing is ideal. Technology is mature, charging networks are expanding and the cost benefits are clearer than ever.

At Startin Group, our teams speak with drivers every day who are exploring electric vehicles for the first time. Many arrive with questions and leave surprised by how practical and enjoyable electric ownership can be.
