How to Keep Your Car Cool This Summer

Date Posted: 25 June 2026

Summer is a time for holidays, day trips and weekends away, but with rising temperatures, hot weather and heatwaves can quickly turn a pleasant journey into a frustrating one. Not only uncomfortable and dangerous for you, the heat poses safety risks for your vehicle - leading to interior damage and mechanical problems.

At Startin Group, we are sharing simple advice to help keep your car cooler, safer and ready for the road this summer.

Park in the shade where possible

When a car is left in direct sunlight, heat builds up quickly inside the cabin. Parking in the shade is one of the simplest ways to help keep your car cooler before you set off. It is also worth thinking about where the sun will move during the day.

Use a sun shade or window covers

A windscreen sun shade can drastically reduce the temperature in the car during hot weather. Sun shades help reflect sunlight, reduce heat build-up and protect the dashboard and interior from sun exposure.

They are simple, affordable and easy to keep in the car, making them one of the most practical summer accessories for drivers.

Protect your steering wheel and seats

Dark interiors, leather seats and steering wheels can become extremely hot when left in the sun. Placing a light-coloured towel, blanket or jacket over your steering wheel and seats can help reduce heat build-up and make the car more comfortable when you return.

This is especially useful if you are travelling with children, older passengers or anyone who may be more sensitive to heat.

Use your air conditioning properly

Your air conditioning system is one of the best ways to cool your car down, but many drivers do not use it as efficiently as they could.

Check your owner’s manual to understand your vehicle’s air con settings, including recirculation mode, fan speed and temperature controls. If your air conditioning is not blowing cold, smells unpleasant or takes too long to cool the cabin, it may need an air con check, sanitiser, re-gas or leak test.

Using your air conditioning regularly can also help keep the system working properly, even outside the hottest months.

Consider window tinting carefully

Window tinting can help reduce glare, limit UV exposure and keep the cabin cooler. However, there are legal limits on how dark front windscreens and front side windows can be in the UK.

Before making any changes, check the latest guidance on GOV.UK or speak to a professional installer to make sure your vehicle remains road legal.

How to cool your car down quickly

  • If your car has been sitting in the sun, try to release the trapped hot air before relying fully on the air conditioning.
  • Open the front passenger window fully, then open and close the driver’s door several times to push hot air out of the vehicle.
  • Once inside, start the car and turn the air conditioning to its coldest setting. If your car has the option, begin with fresh air mode to help push hot air out, then switch to recirculation once the cabin starts to cool.
  • For the first few minutes of your journey, open the windows slightly to help move hot air out. Once the cabin temperature drops, close the windows and allow the air conditioning to work more efficiently.

Park in the shade where possible, use a windscreen sun shade, cover hot seats and steering wheels, ventilate the cabin before driving and use your air conditioning efficiently.

Cars trap heat when left in direct sunlight. Glass allows sunlight in, but heat builds up inside the cabin, especially around dashboards, seats and steering wheels.

Open a window and release trapped hot air first, then use your air conditioning on the coldest setting. Once the cabin starts to cool, close the windows and use recirculation mode if available.

Your air conditioning may need a re-gas, sanitiser, leak test or further inspection. A blocked cabin filter or system fault can also affect cooling performance.

Yes. A summer health check can help inspect important areas such as tyres, brakes, fluids, battery condition and air conditioning before warmer weather and longer journeys.

Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow.
