Nissan and Britain - Nearly 40 Years Together

Since Nissan began manufacturing vehicles in Sunderland in 1986, the brand has become an important part of the British automotive industry.

Today, Nissan’s UK presence includes its European design studio in Paddington, engineering facilities in Cranfield, its manufacturing plant in Sunderland and a nationwide network of Nissan dealerships - including Startin Nissan Worcester.

More than 7,000 people are employed across Nissan’s UK operations, while thousands more work throughout its supply chain, retail network and supporting industries.

Together, British designers, engineers, production teams, dealership colleagues and customers have helped create some of the country’s most recognisable vehicles.

Nissan is not simply a brand operating in Britain. It is a brand that has grown alongside Britain.

Paddington - Designed in Britain

Nissan Design Europe is based in Paddington, London, one of the country’s most creative and culturally influential areas.

This is where future Nissan vehicles are imagined, developed and brought to life. The team contributes to Nissan’s global model range, helping shape exterior styling, interiors and the overall personality of future vehicles.

From the earliest sketches and digital concepts to full-size design models, the Paddington team plays an important role in deciding how future Nissan cars will look and feel.

It is a powerful example of the creativity and design talent that Britain brings to Nissan’s worldwide operations.

Cranfield - Engineered in Britain

Nissan’s facility in Cranfield is a centre of engineering excellence and innovation.

Teams at Cranfield work across areas including vehicle development, testing, performance, safety, connected technology and electrification. Their work helps transform new ideas and designs into vehicles ready for everyday roads.

Cranfield also played an important role in the development of the pioneering Nissan LEAF, one of the world’s first widely available mass-market electric vehicles.

As Nissan continues to develop its electric and electrified range, the expertise found at Cranfield will remain central to the future of the brand.

Sunderland - Built in Britain

Nissan’s Sunderland plant is the UK’s largest automotive manufacturing facility and one of the most productive vehicle factories in Europe.

For almost four decades, millions of vehicles have been produced at the site, supporting thousands of jobs and contributing significantly to British manufacturing.

A Nissan rolls off the Sunderland production line approximately every two minutes, demonstrating the scale of Nissan’s UK production operation.

The Nissan Qashqai and Nissan Juke are among the models built at Sunderland, while the plant will also play a central role in Nissan’s electric future.

The third-generation, All-New Electric Nissan Juke is planned for launch in spring 2027 and will also be manufactured in Sunderland.
