As standard, you get 19-inch alloy wheels, a Type R-specific digital driver’s display, rev-matching for downshifts and a large touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

Honda has dialled back the boy-racer vibes slightly for this new Type R. 

For starters, there aren’t any more fake bumper vents or a huge bonnet scoop – instead, you get a smooth body-coloured bumper and a small vent that helps hot air escape from the engine bay.

The brand-new Civic Type R uses the same powerful VTEC Turbo ever delivers a class-leading power-to-weight ratio 2-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine as the old model, albeit with an upgraded turbo that uses a smaller housing and new turbine blades to help it make more power.   

Could this, however, be the last time we see a full-combustion engine from Honda?

The muscular shape is dramatic yet functional. It's been designed to optimise airflow and boost down-force with a new under-spoiler diffuser, resulting in sharper handling and high-speed stability.

The launch of the all-new Type R comes as Honda celebrates 25 years of its iconic high-performance hatchback – and 50 years of Civic. The next-generation model has been engineered to deliver the fastest Civic Type R to date, building on a long tradition of performance cars inspired by the spirit of racing.

This is the all-new Civic Type R – it looks better than ever, has more power, and is already breaking lap records.

Prices are set to start from £46,995.
