Want to get a new car? If it's your first vehicle or you're replacing your existing one, you need to know the true cost of car ownership in the UK to avoid unnecessary headaches in the future. The actual cost of running a car includes many factors and components. There are running expenses, taxes, insurance, and so on to consider.

If you're not sure where to start or would like assistance in selecting a vehicle that suits your lifestyle and budget, drop by your local Startin dealership. In this blog, our experts have given a detailed breakdown of car ownership in the UK.

Purchase Price

This is the upfront cost most are concerned with. Whether you are buying a brand new or a second-hand one, the initial investment can range enormously.

New vehicles: Usually begin at about £15,000 and can extend upwards based on make, model, and add-ons.

Second-hand vehicles: You should be able to find a good second-hand vehicle from about £5,000 upwards based on age, mileage, and condition.

Consider the deposit amount when you're paying for it using PCP, HP, or leasing.

Car Insurance

Insurance is compulsory and typically charged annually or monthly. Prices vary based on:

  • Your age and record
  • The insurance group of the car
  • Where you live
  • Any claims or convictions

Typically, UK motorists pay £400–£800 a year. Shop around or use comparison websites for cheaper deals—and you can also ask experts at Startin Group who can suggest insurer schemes.

3. Road Tax (Vehicle Excise Duty)

This usually varies on various factors such as the fuel type, the level of emission, and the year of registration.

For petrol or diesel vehicles manufactured after 2017, it is generally £180 annually. EVs were initially tax-free in the UK. But from July 2025, they are no longer exempted from road tax. In the case of older vehicles and high-emission cars, the tax is usually higher. It could be £500+ annually.

Make sure you double-check the tax category before you purchase. It could save or cost a considerable amount on yearly expenses.

4. Fuel or Charging Expenses

The fuel expense will depend on how much you travel annually. It will also depend on the model you drive and how fuel-efficient it is. In the case of EVs, home charging tends to be more pocket-friendly, with an annual expense of £500–£700 per annum. Public charging could be more costly, specifically rapid charging.

5. Maintenance and Servicing

Even the most dependable cars require TLC.

Annual servicing: £150–£300 on average, depending on the vehicle and whether it's a minor or full service.

MOT (if the vehicle is over 3 years old): £54.85 maximum allowed by law in the UK.

Repairs and tyres: Set aside at least £300–£500 annually as a contingency. Unexpected expenses always seem to arise.

Go for trusted names like Startin Group, who can provide you with an extra sense of security—particularly if the vehicle includes warranty or extended service contracts.

6. Depreciation

A new vehicle could lose its value through depreciation within the first 3 years. A used car will depreciate at a comparatively slower pace. So, they are most cost-effective in the long run. Keep the depreciation in mind when going for part-exchange or selling.

7. Parking, Tolls & Congestion Charges

This amount will depend on where you live. Usually residential permits will cost  £30–£200+ per annum. You also need to consider toll charges and ULEZ charges. In London, for instance, it could be £12.50 per day or more if your car isn't compliant.

If you are an urban motorist, consider including these as your monthly charges.

8. Finance and Interest Charge

Apart from paying with cash, you can also buy a car with Hire Purchase, lease or PCP. You will need to pay a monthly payment. The interest rate will depend on your credit rating and the lender.

The total cost will vary with the location, car model, mileage and other major factors.

Startin Group Ltd and Thomas Startin Junr Ltd are Appointed Representatives of Automotive Compliance Ltd, who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd's permissions as a Principal Firm allows Startin Group Ltd, Thomas Startin Junr Ltd to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We can introduce you to a selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. An introduction to a lender does not amount to independent financial advice and we act as their agent for this introduction. Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next best offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you ask us what the amount of commission is, we will tell you in good time before the Finance agreement is executed.
